Quick Chat with Jemina
Yoga Teacher diagnosed with bi-polar disorder
Miss Runner: When did you start yoga?
Jemina Jakin: I started doing yoga 3 years ago. 1 year at a yoga studio, and the last 2 years are on my own. I was diagnosed 3 years ago with Bipolar disorder and my doctor advised me to take up yoga so I could be more zen. I was the most stiff in class, had no stamina, and believe it or not, I have never exercised regularly prior to that. I was the slowest go progress in class too, but I kept coming to classes 3 to 5 times a week, and to cut the story short, I was hooked and never turned back.
MR: Do you have a favourite yoga workout spot?
JJ: Yes, the park across the road is my fave yoga spot. It's so pretty and there is hardly anyone there except on weekends.
MR: What is your favourite yoga pose? Is there a yoga pose you are currently working on?
JJ: My favourite yoga pose has to be hanumanasana or split. I have been working on scoliosis and it is extremely difficult for me to do backbend poses. Doing backbend is the hardest for me as I have stiff shoulders and upper back (due to 2 years of weight lifting 5 times a week for the past 2 years), fyi, I weight lift and then do yoga. On top of that, my scoliosis has made my backbend mobility very limited. I am always interested in how much my body is capable of, I'm doing my hardest and will keep on practicing until backbend will never be my enemy, but my best friend.
MR: What is your guilty pleasure food?
JJ: I've got to say that I don't really have any, I eat everything in moderation, and if I crave something like dessert or savoury snack, I will definitely give in, but don't indulge?.
MR: Do you have a goal to achieve this year?
JJ: I would love to have more shoulders and upper back flexibility, that's my goal this year.
