What Is Abstract Art?

According to the Oxford Dictionaries, abstract art is art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colours, and textures.

They key to abstract art is aesthetics, that the formal qualities (e.g. colour) of a painting or sculpture are just as important (if not more so) than its representational qualities (e.g. drawing).  Abstract arts can be explained by pure appreciation of the artwork itself, without having to ask the question "what is the painting/ sculpture of?

Who Is The First Abstract Art Painter?

Russian-born artist, Wassily Kandinsky is generally regarded as the pioneer of abstract art. However, some say that Swedish artist, Hilma af Klint created the first abstract painting in her Stockholm studio in 1906, five years before Kandinsky. It is still arguable whether Kandinsky or Klint is the ultimate groundbreaker.
