MEET THE WORLD CHAMPION BJJ FIGHTER, AMELIA LUI

Miss Runner: How did you get inspired with BJJ?

Amelia Lui: I first got inspired with jiu-jitsu when I lived in London in 2013. I had lots of friends who did BJJ, but I wasn’t quite sure what it was, so I gave it a try to see why they love it so much. Four month after I started, I decided to do my first competition, and somehow I managed to win. That really shows me that anything is possible if you just put your mind to it and this really got me straight into jiu-jitsu and it inspire me to carry on doing it.

MR: How did you prepare yourself for your first competition, emotionally and physically?

AL: I remember preparing my first competition was crazy, because I was not sure what exactly I should do. I remember I did my own training: I trained jiu-jitsu every day, I did cardio on the running machine. But I think the hardest part is to preparing yourself mentally, to me, that’s 50% of the battle. I did a lot of visualisation, and I really truly believe that if you believe something in your mind then you can create it in reality. And that’s the big thing for me trying to get my mindset right during the competition.

MR: What is the toughest part of your practice?

AL: I think the toughest part of my practise is to find the motivation. Day in and day out when you’re training for the big competition, and there are so many days when I leave the mat crying, because I feel like I know nothing when every single muscle in my body hurts and aches. I just don’t want to do it anymore. And then I realise this is what I wake up for every single morning that keeps me going. I told myself that this is just temporary, you’re not going to feel this pain, it’s not going be this hard forever, and it’s going to be worth it.

MR: Are you a foodie?

AL: Yes! I am definitely a foodie! I love food, all kinds of food. Obviously I love a lot of healthy food, but I also like to treat myself. I try to follow “80% eat healthy and 20% have what you want”. I think every thing in moderation is the key.

MR: What is your favourite post workout drink?

AL: I love making my own shakes. At the moment, I really love this shake: I will put strawberry protein powder, and mix it with coconut cream, banana, blueberries and coconut milk, and blend it all together with ice. Ice is the key that makes ever thing taste a lot better!

MR: What is your favourite social activity?

AL: My favourite social activity is definitely being outdoors with my friends. Every opportunity I have, I love going to the beach, being by the ocean is what makes me happiest. I try to do a lot of water sports, wave surfing, stand-up paddle… it’s just what makes me the happiest. So, it would be anything about adventures and outdoors.
