“I wasn't buying smashed avocado for 19[AUD] and four coffees at 4[AUD] each," says Gurner on the show 60 Minutes. We cannot be sure if dumping cash on fancy toasts and overpriced coffees are the sole reason behind the property issue, but making your own smashed avocado toast definitely does not cost more than £12 (if you insist on the caviar toppings, we might have to disappoint). Whipping up an Instagrammable toastie at home is going to save you a few quid - read on and we’ll show you how.

 

Earlier this year, Australian millionaire and real estate mogul, Tim Gurner, implied millennials who are struggling to purchase a home should stop buying fancy avocado toast at restaurants. Whilst the Californian cities are living up to the lifestyle, the brunch item has become an “it” grub all across the globe, including Australia - shout out to Instagram.


Things you need:

- Avocados (we recommend one per person but you can always make more and save some for later)
- Lemon/ lime juice
- Salt (pink himalayan because we care about health)
- Black Pepper
- Garlic powder
- Chilli Flakes (optional)
- Bread or a few lovely pieces of rice cakes

How the magic happens:
 
1. Cut the avocados in half. Take the stone out with a knife and discard. Slice the avocados and scoop out the flesh - put all the green goodness in a bowl, get ready for smashing.

 

2. Add juice of half a lime/ one tsp of lemon juice, a pinch of black pepper, garlic powder and salt (chilli flakes if you want to zhuzh it up). Use the back of a spoon or fork to mash the avocado until spreadable - save the chunkiness for glorious texture.

 

3. Lightly toast your sliced bread (whether it’s a regular, sourdough or rye) with a smudge of butter, or place it on a pan on the hob over a medium-high heat until it turns golden brown. Spread your smashed avocado evenly and generously on your toast and indulge!
